Life is interesting.
Every day is filled with choices to live one way or another. When God gave us the characteristic of “free choice”, he wasn’t kidding. From the time we open our eyes in the morning our day is a fresh canvas and we are holding the brushes.
The problem is we don’t always remember that’s what we’re doing.
Instead of coming to our studio, setting down our steaming cup of coffee, taking a deep breath with a peaceful smile, looking squarely at the canvas, and thoughtfully applying our strokes; sometimes, we hardly look at the canvas at all. With a frustrated groan, we haphazardly push our paintbrush into any old color, slap some strokes on the page, stand up and huff off into the demanding world.
What could have happened if we would have paused? Instead of two minutes slapping a few strokes, we savored thirty, in the glow of an artist, with our full attention.
_______
A few weeks ago, we talked about leaning into what God was whispering to each of us as we traveled through Lent, and here we are in the last week before Easter.
40 days can whip by so fast!
Shuffling to the spare bedroom, one morning before Lent to enjoy some precious moments with him in the candlelight, I asked the Lord how he would lead me during this special season to grow closer to him. I saw myself holding my little Franciscan cross necklace for a few minutes each morning in the candlelight on my knees.
That’s what I did, and it was beautiful.
Instead of forgetting about the brushes in my hand, by taking a few minutes leaning into the Lord, He showed me the colors and strokes.
It’s amazing when we pause and invite Him to lead us, how He does.
This special week heading toward Easter, I don’t want to miss what He has for me. I feel the Spirit leading me to do the same thing again. To pause before the blank canvas of this sacred week and ask, “Lord, how would you have me draw closer to you this week?”
Listening for the simple things He brings to mind, I can't wait to pick up the brushes and paint the next strokes.
